Redstone Book Club: Small Ceremonies
June 2, 2026
Pitkin County Library
12:00 AM
82 Redstone Castle Dr, Redstone Historic District, CO 81623, USA
Word on the street is that this is the Tigers' last season. For Tomahawk “Tommy” Shields, an Indigenous, image-obsessed high school student from Winnipeg, the potential loss of his team serves as a stark reminder of his uncertain future. He can't help but feel that each of his peers has some skill or gift that he lacks, yet each of their perceived virtues hides darker truths, too. Clinton is beloved by teachers, but his "good kid" disposition is a desperate attempt not to fall prey to the gang violence in which his older brother has become enmeshed. Floyd has incredible talent on the ice, yet behind that talent lies deep insecurity about his multiracial background. And the adults that populate Tommy's life—his mother, who struggles with schizophrenia; Pete, the team's wayward Zamboni driver; and elders Maggie and Olga—offer a mixture of well-intentioned but often misguided support and serve as a portent of what the future could hold.
Set in Winnipeg's North End, at the border of Canada's eastern woodlands and central prairies, Small Ceremonies follows a community both at the edge of the world and at the center of something much larger than itself. As its richly drawn characters navigate the thrilling independence of adulthood and the loss of innocence that accompanies adolescence, one can't help but root for Tommy and his community, even as Tommy wrestles with his place in it.

Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world's largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers, but with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants. Until, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman mysteriously washes ashore. Isolation has taken its toll on the Salts, but as they nurse the woman, Rowan, back to strength, it begins to feel like she might just be what they need.
Rowan, long accustomed to protecting herself, starts imagining a future where she could belong to someone again. But Rowan isn't telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realizes Dominic is keeping his own secrets. As the storms on Shearwater gather force, they all must decide if they can trust one another enough to protect the precious seeds in their care before it's too late--and if they can finally put the tragedies of the past behind them to create something new, together.

Children's Concert: Steve Weeks Music
June 11, 2026
Pitkin County Library
4:30 PM
120 N Mill St, Aspen, CO 81611, USA
"A truly original voice on the Kindie music scene, Steve Weeks performs with both a boisterous sense of humor and a deep sense of purpose. “We’re supposed to be entertaining and educating kids,” the Colorado-based singer-songwriter enthuses. “I am sincere about the music I write. If it’s not coming from the heart or isn’t fun, I won’t write it.” That focused attitude about his craft has led to a series of smile-inducing delights across multiple albums, including a trio of themed projects known as “The Alphabet Songs Series” and the critically acclaimed album Dandelion. More recently, Weeks has issued Once I Lived Upon the Sea, a collection of softer, more gentle pieces that continues his musical exploration. Weeks has long been known for his richly layered, acoustic-based songs, and his latest work is no exception. From the gentle bluegrass of “Yellow Jacket” to the water-themed instrumentals “Rain”, “Creek” and “Ocean” to the easy melody of “Dog Beach”, a song about one dog’s pure joy at being let off leash by the sea, Steve creates a peaceful backdrop of guitars, ukuleles and pianos that make the perfect soundtrack for bedtime or any time that you just need a little calming influence in your home."
This event will take place in the Dunaway Community Meeting Room.

Literature Out Loud - Food & Wine Edition
June 16, 2026
Pitkin County Library
11:30 PM
120 N Mill St, Aspen, CO 81611, USA
Literature Out Loud will be bringing you two fine stories featuring Food and Wine. Very timely. Great literature, great readers plus tea and cookies. I know you were hoping for wine, but you’ll be able to find some later. Join us - you’ll be glad you did!
The two stories are "Taste" by Roald Dahl, read by Brad Moore, and "Sorry Fugu" by T.C. Boyle, read by me. These are both witty and well-written. "Taste" is about a mostly friendly wager involving identifying wine by taste--which takes a bad turn. "Sorry Fugu" is about a gourmet chef trying to get a good review from an impossible food critic. They should merge nicely with Aspen's Food & Wine.
Come join us for tea, cookies and great literature! It's story time for grownups in our new quarterly format.
Literature Out Loud is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Americans and the Holocaust Film Screening and Discussion: "From Swastika to Jim Crow"
June 25, 2026
Pitkin County Library
10:00 PM
120 N Mill St, Aspen, CO 81611, USA
Before and during World War II, Jewish scholars who escaped Nazi Germany and immigrated to the U.S. were confronted with antisemitism at major universities and a public distrust of foreigners. A surprising number secured teaching positions at historically African American colleges in the South. This is a story of two cultures, each sharing a burden of oppression, brought together by the tragic circumstances of war.
Following the screening, experts Susan Schulten, Distinguished University Professor of History at the University of Denver, and Joshua Furman, Jeanne Abrams Endowed Director, Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society at the University of Denver, will lead a discussion to provide historical context, explore connections between the Holocaust and American history, and engage the audience in thoughtful dialogue.
